On April 1, 2023, a special lecture by Mr. Minoru Usui, Chairman of Seiko Epson Corporation, was held in the Japanese Studies program “Japanese-style management,” which is a part of the Industry Collaboration Course in collaboration with Mitani Sangyo Co., Ltd. and Koganei Seiki Co., Ltd.

In this lecture, titled “To be an indispensable company with dreams as its power,” Mr. Usui started with an introduction of Epson’s corporate profile, followed by his self-introduction, his history as an engineer, and his efforts for structural reforms as a manager. He also talked about the history of the transition of printers from traditional plate-type printing to type printers, impact printers, laser printers, and inkjet printers, the evolution of inkjet technology, and initiatives to accelerate GX by promoting co-creation and DX in a wide variety of printing fields. The presentation included the latest technology, Precision Core print head, hardware platforms (office/home printing innovation, commercial/industrial printing innovation), software solutions, and business models for a variety of applications. The lecture concluded with a presentation on the business models that drive the organization.
Japanese Studies Program “Japanese Language Management” for BJS students
In the final portion of his speech, he discussed the organizational mindset and his management philosophy. He delivered a powerful message “Have high aspirations and live a fulfilling life with the power of your dreams!”. The lecture allowed students to consider the significance of setting goals.

This collaborative course was launched in autumn 2021 with the cooperation of Mitani Corporation and Koganei Seiki, comprising the BJS subject ‘Japanese management’ and an annual special seminar. It aims to develop human resources who can perceive Japanese manufacturing from a global perspective, with ‘Monozukuri- Japanese style manufacturing’ as the keyword.
