Meet Professor Momoki Shiro – JICA expert currently teaching Bachelor’s Program in Japanese Studies (BJS) and Master’s program in Area Studies at Vietnam Japan University.
Here is the teaching experience of Professor Momoki at VJU:
I am in charge of teaching and supervising research on Japanese history and culture and area studies from the viewpoint of Japan-Vietnam comparisons at VJU. Students are encouraged to think in the context of the broader history of the region of East and Southeast Asia, and global history too. Even in the teaching of history, I normally address contemporary issues such as gender and the environment to deepen students’ understanding of Vietnam and Japan.
I am trying to create a common ground for efficient study of Vietnamese students in such aspects as supplementing their ability of Chinese characters and classical literature, providing them with opportunities of mutual learning (among students of different disciplines) through rotated presentation and discussion in reading circles and research seminars.
I had taught and was involved in liberal arts education, history education reform, and integration of global studies and area studies, tasks which require constant updating of the ‘operating system’ (basic vocabularies and methodologies) of scientific research to be shared among scholars and students. I would like to make use of the work experience I have gained over the years at universities in Japan.
