Dr.Tran Luong Thanh graduated B.Sc in Economics and Finance at the University of York (England), obtained his M.Sc in World Economy and Ph.D (dr.rer.pol) in Political Economy with the focus on Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Jena (Germany).
Dr. Thanh started to study statecraft (roughly translated as the art of economic world) since he read the book Why Nations Fail – Why Nations failed by Acemoglu and Robinson. Then he decided to pursue Economics intensively with in-depth research on business and innovation. He was a scholarship holder of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation under which he experienced many booth camp courses on Social Market Economy in Germany, visited international organizations, participated in group programs, and most of all, attended the debate with international friends on a lot of different topics.
Dr. Thanh did teach International Political Economy courses at the University of Jena. He is an affiliated fellow at IPAG Business School and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, where he is a member of the Social Market Economy Graduate College. His research topic is within the domains of international political economy, entrepreneurship and innovation.
In addition to research and teaching record, he has work experience at different international organizations, specifically on SMEs, entrepreneurship and digitalization policy at the OECD, trade policy and global value chains at the World Bank, and investment and credit guarantees in a German Development Bank project.

Joined VJU as a lecturer at MGL from August 2020, he is in charge of a number of modules in International Economics, one among three pillars of the program including Politics & International Security and International Culture & Society. For nearly 15 years, Dr. Thanh has traveled, studied, and lived in the UK, Germany, France, Ghana and Kenya, working for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), World Bank, and German Development Bank. For Dr. Thanh, to know a place, traveling is not enough, but it is better to live there for at least a few months, to live among the local and immerse in the atmosphere.
Dr. Thanh hopes to make contribution to MGL as the one that equips students with critical thinking, negotiation, dialogue, diplomacy skills via class organization, round tables, debates and debates clubs based on international models such as of the UN and the WTO so that they can become the great governors of the future. “The commitment, regular practice, learning by doing are those that decode the theory, especially in studying economics, engaging economics. In that way, economics is not as hard as it was thought”, Dr. Thanh said.
