For many Vietnamese, Prof. Furuta Motoo – Rector of Viet Nam Japan University (VJU), VNU is well-known in different positions such as Vice President of the University of Tokyo, Japan; former President of Japan Research Association of Viet Nam or as a Chairman of Japan – Viet Nam Friendship Association. In 2016, Prof. Furuta Motoo was appointed as the Rector of Viet Nam Japan University. This was the first time a foreign scholar were appointed to hold that position in a public university in Viet Nam; He was also the first scholar who received the Ho Chi Minh Prize for his research on 1945’s famine in Viet Nam, which was collaborated with Professor. Van Tao – a Vietnamese scholar… In research, Prof. Dr. Furuta Motoo is also respected and admired for his scientific works in social sciences and humanities, especially his profound knowledge in Area Studies and Vietnamese Studies in particular. Recently, on 30th June 2020, Prof. Furuta was the first ever foreign scholar who was appointed as member of the Professor Council of History – Archeology – Ethnology by the Government Council of Professors.

In 2020, VJU opens bachelor program for the first time. The high-quality Bachelor of Japanese Studies (BJS) quota for enrollment is 50 students. BJS has been planned up by Prof. Furuta for a number of years. With a vision towards a comprehensive bachelor program for Vietnamese students in Viet Nam – his second homeland, he involves closely in BJS development such as program design, lecturers selection, Japanese expertise and collaboration universities connection… With his deep dedication and VJU’s strategy, BJS comes up being the most comprehensive bachelor program on Japanese studies in Viet Nam so far.

For the first enrollment, VJU has received positive feedbacks from the society: students and their parents are keenly interested, come to ask for info., and are willing to register for BJS. The feedbacks show that BJS comes up on time to meet the demand of the society, especially for those who desire to do intensive study in Japanese culture, religion, laws and its language.

In 2020, Prof. Furuta Motoo was awarded the Daido Seimei Prize for the scholars with excellent research work on Area Studies. More notably, Rector Furuta has saved part of the prize worth 2 million yen (more than VND 400 million) as a scholarship fund for excellent students of BJS. Accordingly, 02 scholarships (worth 160,000 yen) will be granted for 2 students of BJS with excellent record each semester. The fund, which is an initiative of a scholar who loves Vietnamese students and wishes to make contribution in the country higher education is hoped to be an encouragement for BJS students in their study.
