On 8 March 2023, the Undergraduate Civil Engineering Programme welcomed its first batch of students with an engaging lineup of lectures on Introduction to Civil Engineering. The program commenced with the first eight lectures delivered by a team of distinguished Japanese faculty members, with the remaining seven to be presented by their Vietnamese counterparts. Notably, the Japanese lecturers leading the charge currently serve as faculty members in charge of the Master’s Programme in Civil Engineering (MCE) at Vietnam-Japan University (VJU).

JICA expert Prof.Shinichi Takeda kicked off the first lecture with a captivating definition of civil engineering and social capital (infrastructure). The talk focused on introducing entrants to the field of civil engineering and showcasing the role of ODA in developing infrastructure in Viet Nam. The informative lecture also covered a wide array of topics, including the significance of anticipating future projections with reference to airport user trends and the constructive approaches to enhancing traffic in Hanoi.

Students were also reminded of the importance of English language communication from their university days, especially since English is the preferred communication language in many Japanese companies operating in Viet Nam. Overall, the first lecture provided the students with an excellent opportunity to consider how they could link their university studies to their future careers.
