The Industrial Revolution 4.0 has had a significant influence on many areas of life, especially the agricultural sector, which is facing competition in the globalization trend.
Traditional agriculture is distinguished by its low technicality and use of little technology; it largely depends on the capabilities of farmers. Smart agriculture applies high technology (automation, mechanization, etc.), production technology, product assurance (GAP, GlobalGAP, organic…), management technology, and product identification associated with an AI system (Artificial intelligence).
Grasping that trend, the Engineer’s Program in Smart Agriculture and Sustainability (ESAS) at VJU has built an advanced training framework including three main specialties:
(1) “Agroecology”, which aims to shed deep insights into complexity of agricultural ecosystem and create its sustainable management;
(2) “Japanese-style agricultural engineering”, which aims to realize Society 5.0 in the agricultural sector by utilizing advanced science and technology such as robotics, AI, and IoT;
(3) “Start-up in agriculture and Enterprise management”, which aims to create and manage businesses oriented toward the development of agriculture in harmony with ecosystems and human values.
The partner of the program is the University of Tokyo, the most prestigious university in Japan, which is ranked 35th in the world according to The Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2022 (Learn more).
