September 9, 2019, the Rector of VJU, Prof. Furuta Motoo delivered the opening address, thanking Associate Professor Pham Bao Son, Vice President of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Professor Mimura Nobuo, President of Ibaraki University, Distinguished Guests and all of VJU lecturers, students and staffs for their contributions to the introduction of Institute of Sustainability Science (ISS).

As the first research institute under VJU, the Rector mentioned its great deal to all of VJU members. It plays a role not only in research, but also in attracting domestic and international scientists to come for professional exchange and professional activities and to form international interdisciplinary research groups.
“When VJU was established, it was our thinking that Japan and Vietnam would work together to create a new university that could create and convey new values to the world. With that in mind, we are promoting Sustainable Development as a basic philosophy of VJU. In today’s world, universities are expected to play a major role for sustainable development.” shared Prof. Furuta Motoo.
“To be a leading “Research University” in Asia in the field of Advanced Technology and Interdisciplinary Sciences for sustainable development utilizing the strengths of Vietnam and Japan. To be top university in Asia in the field of Sustainability Science.” addressed Dr. Nguyen Hoang Oanh, Vice – Rector of VJU.
VJU’s mission is nurturing high-quality HRs to be the next generations of leaders, managers and experts in Vietnam, Japan, Southwest Asia, and the world, providing research products in advanced engineering, technology and inter-disciplinary Science for sustainable development, contributing to VNU’s missions and visions and having positive impacts in Vietnam’s higher education system and promoting Vietnam – Japan Cooperation, he added.

The Director of ISS Prof. Jun Nakajima showed that Institute was established with the aim of promoting the research activities of VJU and it contributes to development of research projects, collaborative research, dissemination of research results, and improvement of the quality of research in VJU. Its mission is to develop VJU into Asia’s most prestigious research-oriented university in the fields of advanced technology and interdisciplinary science that contribute to sustainable development.

Assoc.Prof. Pham Bao Son, Vice President of Vietnam National University, Hanoi addressed the importance as well as congratulated on the introduction of ISS. “As you may know, in recent years, sustainable development has become an indispensable global trend. In order to facing global challenges in all dimensions of sustainable development, including economic, social and environmental development, it is crucial to draw out ambition, action orientation collaboration, strategies to address these problems. Sustainable development is believed to be a solution to the development of any economy. The increasing demand for deep and scientific understanding of sustainability as well as negative factors that may affect the sustainable development. It is the reason why we have the term called sustainability science. In response to the social needs, VJU has acquired sustainability science as one of the research and education philosophies. The launching of ISS will not only help VJU take a closer step to achieve their goal but also enhance their involvement in solving global problems by conducting and providing practical research in global market”.

At the end of the ceremony, the President of Ibaraki University Prof. Mimura Nobuo delivered a special lecture about “Changes Emerged after Paris Climate Agreement” which addressing 4 topics of “Big Tide for Era of Transformation”, “Impacts of Paris Agreement and SDGs”, “Integrated Approach to Social, Environmental, Economic Issues” and “Challenges for Sustainability Science Research”.
