Topic: Human behaviour during changing climates at Madjedbebe, Australia’s earliest archaeological site.
Speaker: Associate Professor Ben Marwick- Department of Anthropology, University of Washington
Abstract: In this talk, the speaker will introduce recent research into human behaviour during changing climates over the Late Pleistocene and Holocene at Madjedbebe, Australia’s earliest archaeological site. He will summarise the dating and archaeology of the site. He will present three of our studies on past climates at this important site: sediment carbon isotope analyses, biochemical analysis of residues on grinding stones, and food plant isotope analyses. The results show changes in precipitation and vegetation during the Last Glacial Maximum, which helps to explain some of the archaeological changes that also occur around this time.
