From February 26 to March 3, 2018, a field working visit to Thua Thien Hue province was organized by the Master’s Program in Environmental Engineering and the Master’s Program in Climate Change & Development, Vietnam Japan University in collaboration with the University of Tokyo.

During the trip, the delegation worked with the School of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University to successfully organize the academic exchange workshop to facilitate learning and sharing between lecturers, students from the Schools and eminent researchers from Hue University. The workshop focused on environment, climate change and sustainable development in the coastal central provinces, underpinned by in-depth analyzes of development challenges.

Other highlights of the trip include field trips to Tam Giang – Cau Hai lagoon, dioxin contaminated areas in A Luoi district, and the model of community-based development project sponsored by JICA. In particular, students had the opportunity to work in teams to study the development challenges faced by Thua Thien Hue, including: domestic waste management, sustainable tourism, hydropower operation, livelihood for lagoon people against the backdrop of climate change, depletion of biological resources, and challenges in the course of development.

In the next few days, the delegation will visit Quang Nam province, which is seriously at risk of many environmental problems such as coastal landslides, floods, reservoir management and sustainable management of water resources.

Field trips are regularly organized as part of the Master’s programs at Vietnam Japan University. The purpose of these is to provide students with the opportunity to gain practical exposure, learn, mingle, build network and gather facts and knowledge for their learning and researching activities.
