III. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. Admission scope
Vietnam Japan University conducts admissions nationwide and internationally.
2. Eligibility requirements
2.1 General requirements
- Personal background: Clear personal record, not currently serving a criminal sentence or disciplinary action at warning level or higher.
- Health: Sufficient health for study.
Academic qualifications
Applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
- Graduated with a Bachelor’s degree (full-time) with distinction or higher in a relevant discipline (Group I);
- Graduated with a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Group II);
- Graduated with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Sciences and Humanities in Japan;
- Hold an equivalent Level 7 qualification under the Vietnamese Qualifications Framework in relevant specialized fields.
Foreign degrees must be officially recognized under current regulations.
Applicants must also meet the program’s admission standards as regulated by the Ministry of Education and Training and the doctoral program.

Research capacity
Applicants must demonstrate research experience through a Master’s thesis (research-oriented program) and published works.
Applicants with professional-oriented Master’s degrees or those applying from Bachelor’s level must have at least one academic publication (journal article or conference paper with peer review and ISBN/ISSN).
Research proposal
A research proposal written in Japanese is required, including: proposed topic, research field, rationale, literature review, objectives, methodology, expected outcomes, reasons for selecting the institution, study plan, and applicant’s preparation. A proposed supervisor may be included.
Recommendation letters
At least one recommendation letter from a scientist holding a PhD, Associate Professor, or Professor title, or doctoral degree holders with relevant expertise and experience in Japanese Studies or Japanese Language Education.
The letter must assess:
- Academic ethics, research ability, and professional competence;
- For potential supervisors: evaluation of feasibility, significance of the topic, and supervision capacity;
- Additional comments and level of support for the applicant.
Work experience
At least 01 year of relevant working experience in Japanese-related fields for applicants from Group II Master’s programs, or equivalent research capacity.
Financial commitment
Commitment to fulfill financial obligations during the study period.
Foreign language requirement
Japanese proficiency equivalent to Level 4 or higher under the Vietnamese 6-level Foreign Language Framework or equivalent.

2.2. Specific Requirements
Applicants who are Vietnamese citizens must meet Japanese language proficiency requirements equivalent to Level 4 or higher under the Vietnamese 6-Level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework. This requirement must be demonstrated by one of the following documents:
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher awarded by a foreign institution, a branch of a foreign institution in Vietnam, or a Vietnamese institution in which the program was delivered entirely in a foreign language;
- A Bachelor’s degree in a foreign language major or foreign language teacher education major issued by a Vietnamese higher education institution;
- One of the foreign language certificates equivalent to Level 4 or higher under the Vietnamese 6-Level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework, issued within 02 years from the test date to the application submission date, and still valid at the time of application submission (as specified in Appendix 1 and Appendix 2).
The admission of foreign applicants or Vietnamese citizens residing abroad to VNU Hanoi shall be implemented in accordance with the Regulations on the Attraction and Management of International Students at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, issued under Decision No. 4848/QĐ-ĐHQGHN dated December 18, 2017.

IV. ADMISSION SCORE, ADMISSION THRESHOLD, AND STUDY PLAN
ADMISSION SCORE
Applicants for doctoral programs must achieve a total score of at least 60 points based on the evaluation of application documents and the research proposal. In addition, the research proposal must obtain a minimum score of 25/40 points to be eligible for admission consideration.

ADMISSION THRESHOLD
The admission threshold is determined based on the assigned training quota and is calculated by ranking candidates according to their total admission scores and overall academic dossier evaluation scores, from the highest to the lowest, until the quota for each program/major is filled.
STUDY PLAN
3.1. Enrollment time: Expected in July and September 2026, corresponding to two admission rounds.
3.2. Duration of study:
- For applicants holding a Master’s degree: 03 years (36 months)
- For applicants holding a Bachelor’s degree: 04 years (48 months)
Successful candidates will be officially recognized as graduate students and doctoral candidates upon completion of enrollment procedures.
TUITION FEE
Tuition fee for the Doctoral Program in Japanese Studies: 60,000,000 VND per year per doctoral candidate.
