Abstract
Pursuing a Doctoral degree can be a life-changing decision, but it is surely not for everyone. In this specialized seminar, the speaker discusses the importance of a Doctoral degree from the aspect of career development, which is illustrated by comparisons between several countries and comparisons between academia and enterprise environments. The pros and cons, the career opportunities and the risks that come with a PhD title are thoroughly analyzed. For aspiring PhD students, the speaker also reviews and presents various requirements to successfully acquire the degree, such as academic grades, research results, research team contribution and paper publication. In this seminar, several significant yet non-traditional topics are also discussed, such as the work-life balance of a PhD student, the relationship with academic supervisor or the social status that comes with a PhD degree holder.
