  1. What is Vietnam-Japan University? Is it a Japanese university?

Vietnam-Japan University (VJU) is newly opened in 2016 under strong supports from the governments of Japan and Vietnam, and it is one of the member universities of Vietnam’s top-level university; Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

  1. Is the degree of VJU highly recognized in Japan?

Of course, the degree of VJU is highly recognized all over the world.

  1. How is the academic level of VJU?

Master’s programs of VJU are developed on cooperation with Japanese coordinating universities such as University of Tokyo and aim to meet the demand for high-quality human resources of Vietnamese society and Japanese enterprises. VJU has Japanese fulltime lecturers and many short-term Japanese professors sent to teach students. Therefore, academic qualities of VJU is high.

Tuition and Scholarship


  1. How much is the academic fee?

Together with admission fee (1,800,000 VND) and 2-year tuition fee (75,000,000 VND), approximately 3,500 USD is needed for 2 years study in VJU, which is 1/3 of Japanese national universities. International students must prepare other daily costs, insurance and traveling fees too, but the cost must be much low compare to study in Japan.

  1. Is there any scholarship program?       

There are scholarship programs for excellent international students mainly donated by Japanese companies.

Class and Study


  1. In what languages ​​does the classes take place and research in VJU?

Common subjects, major courses and Japanese classes will be conducted in English (Advanced Japanese class will be conducted in Japanese). In addition to taking classes, master's thesis must be written in English.

  1. Is Vietnamese language proficiency needed?     

Vietnamese language is not mandatory for study in VJU. However, to have comfortable life in Vietnam, some Vietnamese language skill is recommendable.  International students can study Vietnamese after the admission to VJU.

  1. I would like to learn Vietnamese. Do you have a Vietnamese class?        

It is possible to set Vietnamese classes for international students.

  1. Do Japanese students also need to attend Japanese classes?        

Japanese students do not need to attend Japanese language classes.

  1. Where will be the internship program implemented?  

The internship programs are set for the 3rd semester and mainly conducted in Vietnam. (The Japanese government supports internship program for Vietnamese students, but international students are not eligible for this.) We will consult individually about the internship in your home country.

  1. Are the facilities and equipment for students’ research and experience enough?

VJU tries to enhance these equipment, but research facilities are not good as Japanese universities especially in the science and engineering fields. However, on-site research in Vietnam where the economic is rapidly growing and where many problems are now raising will be the great opportunities for VJU students.



  1. Do you accept international students in all programs?

Yes, all programs in VJU accept international students.

  1. CAN i apply for any program? can i apply for VJU master’s program which is different from my bachelor’s study?

In Vietnam, each master’s program has its own list of the same, relevant or closely related majors. And basically, students cannot apply for the master’s program which is not related to his/her bachelor’s program.

If you wish to apply for the different program or if your bachelor’s program is not listed, your qualification must be examined before the application deadline. The list is shown in the application guide.

  1. Is there a special entrance examination for international students?

No. Regardless of nationality, you will take the same exam.  Students from VJU's partner university can get the exemption of entrance exam fee.

  1. Is the entrance exam only organized in Vietnam?

You can submit application documents and take entrance examinations online.

  1. Only IELTS score can be accepted?  How about TOEIC, TOEFL or another test?

VJU accepts the result of other international English proficiency test.

  1. Do I need to apply by myself?  Can someone on behalf of myself apply?

Application document must be submitted by the applicant him/herself.

Student Life


  1. How much is the monthly cost for living?

It depends on where you stay and how you live, but it is said that the living costs in Vietnam is 1/3 of costs in Japan. Some ideas for living costs: Light meal (Banh My, Pho, or rice meal): 20,000~50,000 VND (100~250 JPY), Water (450 ml bottle): 5,000 VND~ (25 JPY~), Bus (1 way) : 7,000 VND (35 JPY), 1 can of Bear: 10,000 VND~ (50 JPY~).

  1. Is there support for housing?      

You can live in student dormitory owned by the Vietnam National University of Hanoi (10 minute-walk from VJU). The cost of living depends on the facilities of room, but approximately 2,500 JPY per month.
VJU staff can support international students to find private apartment around VJU.

  1. How is the quality of dormitory?

Compare to dormitories in Japanese universities, living conditions in Vietnamese student dormitory might not be good for Japanese. Normally, 1 room has 6 beds and there is no privacy inside. Some Japanese students who came to VJU as internship have already stayed and satisfied with the conditions for 3 months, but VJU recommends staying at hotel for first some weeks to check the conditions of apartment and dormitory.

  1. What should I do if I get injured or get sick? 

There is a city hospital near VJU and Vietnamese staff can support you. Also, there are several clinics with Japanese doctors and nurses. Students can receive treatments in Japanese language.

  1. Is there national health insurance in Vietnam or is there any requested insurance by VJU?  When I get injured or sick in Vietnam, will the health insurance or medical insurance be covered?

There is no Japanese-style national health insurance in Vietnam. International students are requested to buy insurance individually.

For Japanese students, VJU highly recommends buying “study abroad health insurance” in Japan.

  1. Can international students work part-time in Vietnam?  Can you introduce a part-time job?

International students can take a part time job, but Vietnamese language skill is required in most cases. So far, VJU does not introduce part-time jobs for students.

  1. Do I need to obtain VISA by myself?

Staff of VJU will support and issue the necessary documents for immigration office. With the document and photo, application fee, student him/herself visits Vietnamese embassy in the country to apply for student Visa.

  1. Is there a tutor system for international students?

VJU does not start the official system of tutor, but student volunteer can support international students upon requests.

  1. Are there any opportunities for international students to go to study abroad?

Yes, all VJU students can take the opportunities of student exchange programs under MOU with partner universities.

  1. Is there specific supporter for international students?    

The consultation for the international students will be supported by the officer as below.

Career Supports


  1. After the graduation from VJU, what is my career path?

VJU has been receiving great attention especially from Japanese companies in Vietnam and ASEAN countries.  So, the international students who have knowledge of both Japan and Vietnam have strong advantages in job hunting. After graduating from VJU, students may get job position in Japanese companies in Vietnam or in the head office in Japan. Also, from the research results in VJU, students may apply for PhD program in Japan or in other countries.

  1. What kind of career supports programs can I have in VJU?

VJU intends to provide the same quality career supports of Japanese university, and Japanese staff who has an experience in working Japanese university or institute supports student's career. VJU organizes frequent seminars for job hunting and company information sessions.

  1. Can I study doctorate course in Japan after graduation?

VJU is supported by the Japanese government and has partnership with leading universities in Japan, so we can support doctoral studies in Japan as well.

  1. After graduation, can I get a job in Japan?

VJU has been receiving great attention from Japanese companies and is expected to become an educational institution that produces excellent talent in ASEAN. It is possible to support to match with Japanese companies through job fairs and corporate briefing sessions.

  1. Can I get a job in Vietnam after graduation?  

Yes. There is a strong demand of young Japanese who has deep understandings of Vietnamese society since there are many Japanese companies in Vietnam and Vietnamese companies which have business with Japanese companies.
