The notion of green bank has just been introduced since 2011 in Viet Nam. According to the National Strategy on green growth for the period 2011- 2020 with vision to 2050 that the Prime Minister approved on September 2012, “Green Finance” and “Green Bank” are actually a part of “Green Growth”. Therefore, in order to develop towards sustainable green growth, a developing country like Viet Nam should consider banking system and financial institutions as principal subjects which play a crucial role in the green finance campaign. Banking system and financial institutions will decide to offer capital to “green” projects that focus on promoting social economics development and will play an extremely crucial role in supporting a stable development of the national economy. As a lender, banks contain a huge part in direct the investment fund into environmentally friendly projects.
This research aims to assess the development level of green bank in Viet Nam by using Kaeufer’s model (Kaeufer K., 2010) of Green Bank with five levels and simultaneously evaluate determinants affecting the development of green banks in Vietnam through EFA method. Based on empirical results and discussions, the research proposes some recommendations in attempt to develop green bank in the upcoming time for a sustainable development in Viet Nam.
